Hand-Coloured Print after James Gillray (1810)

A lively satirical interior scene, lampooning the chaos of amateur music-making. A uniformed flautist plays enthusiastically (standing on the dog’s tail), while a lady pounds away at the square piano, joined by a boy with a toy trumpet. The portly patriarch snoozes in his chair, and even a mischievous monkey scatters sheet music on the floor.

This edition is a German hand-coloured print, c.1890–1930, based on James Gillray’s famous caricature “A Little Music — or — The Delights of Harmony” (first published in 1810). The printed caption mistakenly attributes the work to William Hogarth, but the composition is Gillray’s celebrated satire (BM Satires 11611).
