This is a genuinely old piece rather than a modern decorative reproduction. The reverse is particularly convincing, with its dark, naturally aged hand-cut timber, traditional construction, oxidised fixings and long-established surface wear.
Attributed to Morocco and dating from the early 20th century, the shaped wooden frame has been faced with thin brass sheet, intricately embossed and punched with stylised flowers, scrolling foliage and geometric details. ABOUT THIS PIECE
This unusual mirror draws upon the pointed arches and richly ornamented surfaces associated with traditional Moroccan and wider North African design.
The frame has been individually cut from timber before being faced with embossed brass sheet. Its elaborate outline incorporates a tall central pointed arch, two smaller flanking points and a decorative lower flourish.
The brass surface is filled with hand-worked scrolling leaves, stylised flowers and small punched details. A narrow folded brass border follows the mirror’s complex silhouette.
Applied oval and circular decorations in shades of amber-orange, dark brown and pale pink introduce an additional layer of colour and texture. Their precise composition has not been scientifically tested and they are therefore described according to their appearance.
The reverse provides particularly good evidence of the mirror’s age. The darkened timber, hand-cut construction, oxidised metalwork, old hanging fitting and naturally accumulated wear are entirely consistent with an early-20th-century piece.
The mirror retains what appears to be its original glass. Its softly clouded and foxed surface contributes enormously to the authentic antique character.
CONDITION
Characterful antique condition with wear consistent with age, traditional handmade construction and previous use.
The brass has developed a warm, naturally aged patina, with tarnishing, oxidation, rubbing, small dents, marks and variations in colour. There is wear around the applied embellishments, and some of the smaller surrounding beads or decorative elements appear to be missing.
The original mirror plate has scratches, spotting, clouding, foxing and areas of deterioration to the silvering. It remains usable as a decorative mirror, although the reflection is aged rather than pristine.
The wooden reverse has scratches, marks, small separations and considerable age-related surface wear. These are particularly visible on the back and support the mirror’s genuine age.
The original hanging fitting remains attached. As this is an antique fitting, I recommend that the buyer checks it before hanging and uses a wall fixing appropriate for the mirror’s weight and the construction of their wall.
