ABOUT THIS PIECE

A charming antique porcelain tray decorated with a finely detailed sepia-toned scene of winged cupids dancing beneath a tree.

The image is adapted from The Dance of the Cupids by Italian Baroque artist Francesco Albani (1578–1660). The playful cupids have laid aside their bows, arrows and quivers, which can be seen scattered across the foreground.

The softly printed monochrome decoration contrasts beautifully against the creamy-white porcelain, while a narrow gilt border follows the gently rounded rectangular shape.

Originally intended as a small decorative or dressing-table tray, it would now make a lovely jewellery dish, pin tray or display piece. It would also look particularly attractive mounted as part of a collection of classical porcelain plaques and trays.

The reverse is largely unmarked, apart from a small hand-painted brown decorator’s stroke. I have not been able to attribute the piece conclusively to a particular manufacturer.

THE QUICK DETAILS

Origin: Continental Europe
Date: Circa 1900–1930

DETAILS & CONDITION

The tray is in good decorative antique condition, with general surface wear, small marks and minor glaze or transfer irregularities consistent with its age.

There is slight rubbing to the gilt border, together with a few tiny surface specks and marks. These signs of age add to the softly timeworn character of the piece.

Please study all the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.

A delightful classical porcelain tray for a dressing table, bedside table, gallery wall or collection of antique cherub and putti decoration.

I have another very similar dish listed - not quite a matched pair as very slightly different sizes
