ABOUT THIS PIECE

A beautiful antique porcelain display tray featuring a finely detailed sepia-toned classical scene of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers and spring, travelling in an elaborate chariot accompanied by dancing nymphs and playful putti.

The scene appears to have been inspired by traditional representations of The Triumph of Flora, including the celebrated painting by the 17th-century French artist Nicolas Poussin. Flora wears a garland of flowers and is seated within an ornate chariot while winged putti pull the procession forward.

The softly printed monochrome decoration has the appearance of an antique engraving and contrasts beautifully against the creamy-white porcelain. A fine gilded line follows the gently rounded rectangular edge.

This elegant decorative tray could be used as a vanity tray, jewellery dish, pin tray or perfume-bottle stand. It would also look wonderful displayed upright on a shelf or included within a collection of classical and Grand Tour-inspired objects.

The underside is unmarked, so I have not attributed it conclusively to a particular factory. Its refined porcelain body, sepia transfer decoration and gilded edging suggest Continental European manufacture, probably dating from the late 19th or early 20th century.
