An exceptionally rare pair of antique Wedgwood dinner plates in the beautiful Chinese Temples pattern, introduced by Wedgwood in 1828.
Dating to circa 1830, each plate features an intricate blue-and-white transfer-printed scene of an imagined Chinese landscape filled with pagodas, pavilions, figures, bridges, distant mountains and cascading willow trees.
The central landscape is surrounded by an elaborate floral border of flowers, scrolling foliage and richly detailed ornament. The gently shaped rims are finished with a particularly attractive moulded beaded border.
These are genuine late Georgian Wedgwood plates dating from the earliest period of the Chinese Temples pattern. Both bear the clearly impressed WEDGWOOD factory mark on the underside, together with additional impressed and painted workmen’s marks.
The Chinese Temples pattern is exceptionally difficult to find, particularly as a matching pair of full-sized dinner plates in such remarkably good condition. At the time of listing, I could find no other matching Wedgwood Chinese Temples dinner plates currently being offered for sale.
They would make an important addition to a collection of early Wedgwood, English transferware or Georgian ceramics. Their scale and richly detailed cobalt-blue decoration would also make them wonderful display plates for an English country-house interior or carefully curated plate wall.

DETAILS & CONDITION
Both plates are in exceptionally good antique condition considering that they are approaching 200 years old.
There are no chips, cracks or repairs. There is light surface wear, minor scratching, glaze crazing and small firing or transfer irregularities consistent with their considerable age and early manufacture.
There are subtle natural variations in the depth and registration of the blue transfer-printed decoration. These are characteristic of early transferware and reflect the traditional manufacturing techniques used during the Georgian period.
