ABOUT THIS PIECE

A wonderfully timeworn original French enamel advertising sign produced circa 1950 for Super Blanc Demarle-Lonquety, a white Portland cement manufactured by the Société des Ciments Français.

Made from heavy enamelled steel, this circular sign has a distinctly convex or domed profile. Its striking design features a pale blue ground, a large white starburst and bold black typography reading:

SUPER BLANC
DEMARLE
LONQUETY

The inscription around the outside reads “Société des Ciments Français”.

Demarle was an important name in French cement production. Charles Demarle and Émile Dupont established a cement works at Boulogne-sur-Mer in 1850, forming part of the company that later became Ciments Français. Super Blanc Demarle-Lonquety was promoted as an architectural white cement and used in French modernist construction.

This is a genuine vintage French advertising plaque and not a modern reproduction. Its dark, naturally oxidised reverse, convex construction, original fixing holes and substantial enamel loss are entirely consistent with its age and many years of outdoor display.

THE QUICK DETAILS

Origin: France
Date: Circa 1950
Material: Enamelled steel
Dimensions: Approximately 40 cm / 15.75 inches diameter
Shape: Circular and convex
Colours: Pale blue, cream-white and black
Fixings: Four original fixing holes

DETAILS & CONDITION

This sign is in heavily weathered and authentically distressed condition.

There are extensive areas of enamel loss and surface rust, particularly around the perimeter, together with scratches, marks and further losses through parts of the lettering.

The reverse has widespread natural oxidation and historic surface wear. The sign remains structurally sound and wonderfully decorative.

Please study all the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description. The wear, losses and aged patina are integral to the character of this genuine vintage advertising sign.

A fabulous piece of French industrial history that would look particularly effective in a kitchen, loft, workshop, garden room, café, restaurant or collection of vintage advertising signs.
