ABOUT THIS PIECE

A wonderfully decorative vintage Japanese stoneware pedestal goblet from Otagiri’s discontinued Hacienda collection, designed by Hozan and dating from approximately the 1970s–1980s.

The creamy-white speckled glaze is decorated with a beautifully stylised cobalt-blue scene of flowering prunus blossom emerging around a rocky landscape. Warm brown lines around the rim and pedestal base give the piece additional definition and character.

Its tall, slightly tapering beaker form stands on a shaped pedestal foot. Comparable pieces from the Hacienda collection were produced as ceramic wine goblets, although this example would also look lovely holding a small arrangement of flowers or simply displayed as a decorative object.

The underside bears a small hand-painted blue workshop or decorator’s mark. Otagiri Mercantile Company exported handcrafted Japanese ceramics during the second half of the 20th century, and many examples were originally identified by paper labels that have subsequently been lost.

DETAILS & CONDITION

The goblet is in good decorative vintage condition, with general surface wear, small marks, glaze irregularities and areas of crazing consistent with its age.

There is a star-shaped area of glaze crazing or an old firing line visible inside the bottom of the goblet. It appears stable and is shown clearly in the photographs.

There are also small speckles and imperfections within the glaze, together with natural variation in the hand-applied decoration and brown edging.

Please study all the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.

A very attractive example of vintage Japanese export pottery for a shelf, mantelpiece, bedside table or collection of Otagiri and blue-and-white ceramics.
